1mDESCRIPTION22m
4mInews24m 4mi24mnjects an article into the 4mnews24m flow, installing it
locally and broadcasting it (if appropriate) onto the net
work. The article is read from 4mfile24ms or standard input if
none. 4mInews24m adds and alters headers, notably 1mMessageID:22m,
1mFrom:22m and 1mPath:22m, deletes invisible characters, and appends
the first four lines of 1m$HOME/.signature22m, if any, to the
article, and then hands it to 4mrelaynews24m(8), provided the
newsgroup(s) are unmoderated. If the groups are moder
ated, the article will instead be mailed to the moderators
of the moderated newsgroups in the 1mNewsgroups:22m header.
1minews22m 1mp22m 4mfiles24m is exactly equivalent to invoking 1mcat22m 4mfiles24m
1m|22m 1mrelaynews22m 1mr22m, where 4mfiles24m may be an empty list; there is
no automatic recovery of the input file(s) in case of
errors, full disks or other problems. Normal usage is
1minews22m 1mh22m, which assumes the presence of at least 1mSubject:22m
and 1mNewsgroups:22m headers in the article. 1m-h22m tells 4minews24m
that the article starts with headers; otherwise it starts
with the article body. 1m-x22m prevents transmission to site
4mexcludedsite24m. 1m-A22m waits until enough space becomes free
in 1m/usr/spool/news22m. 1m-M22m does nothing, for B news compati
bility. 1m-V22m causes 4mrelaynews24m to emit a log file line on
stdout after processing is complete, by having 4mrelaynews24m
not redirect stdout and stderr to 1m/usr/lib/news/log22m and
1m/usr/lib/news/errlog.22m 1m-W22m waits for 4mrelaynews24m to complete,
instead of running it in the background and not waiting.
The rest of the options are inherited from B news and
exist only for backwardcompatibility with news readers.
4mThey24m 4mshould24m 4mnot24m 4mbe24m 4mused24m 4mby24m 4mhumans,24m as they are equivalent
to adding the obvious headers, with two small twists: 1m-f22m
generates 1mFrom:22m 4mFrom:contents24m which generates a 1mSender:22m
4muser1m24m@4m22mhost24m header if there is no 1mSender:22m header in the
input, and 1m-C22m tells you to use 4maddgroup24m for local group
creations and tells you what to feed to 1minews22m 1mh22m for
global ones.

1mDIAGNOSTICS22m
4minews24m can take several seconds to run, so it almost imme
diately begins running in the background; error messages
may appear somewhat later, perhaps in the midst of other
activity.

part of the C news project.
1mBUGS22m
4mInews24m should be unnecessary; its only useful function is
adding 1mMessageID:22m headers and most novices use 4mPnews24m,
which could invoke 4mrelaynews24m directly.
